My Philosophy of Education
By Anna Friendshuh
Of all of the five philosophies of education, I would have to agree most with the progressivist view on education. I, myself, have always thought that education is taught best through hands-on activities. In a classroom of young students, they are more apt to enjoy activities that are both fun and meaningful for them. The curriculum of the classroom should be centered on the interests and experiences of the students. This student-centered curriculum will show students that they are important and help these students learn by what they see as most relevant in their lives. I believe that this environment also helps students develop social skills through group projects and interactions. Students learn to share responsibilities and become clever problem solvers. Having an early childhood minor, I believe that this progressivist philosophy of education is very important for younger students because these students are more able to learn by doing things. These students are not able to sit for long hours listening to the teacher lecture on material. The young students learn better through social interaction. I agree most with the philosophy of prgressivism because I, myself, enjoy hands-on learning and creativity in the classroom. I, as a teacher, believe that this progressivism will work best for the students that I plan on teaching.
